iPod Touch jailbreak with 2.0 firmware
This guide will show you step by step how you jailbreak your iPod Touch running firmware 1.1.4 or below to a fully jailbroken
iPod with 2.0 firmware, access to the
AppStore (with all its
applications) and Cydia installed.
Step 1: Requirements
To be able to jailbreak your iPod and get the 2.0 firmware running, you'll need to make sure you have the following
things downloaded and ready on your computer. You will need a custom, pre-created 2.0 firmware (IPSW file), created with
Pwnage on the Mac. If you don't have a Mac, you'll have to download a custom
firmware from the net (link provided below).
You need the following things:
Note: The filesize of your 2.0 firmware might be different if you download it from another source. Make sure you grab your
custom firmware from a trusted location, or you'll risk bricking your iPod. If your 2.0 firmware filesize and MD5 sum match the
values above then you can be reasonably sure you're using the same custom firmware as I did.
Step 2: Install iTunes 7.5
Make sure you're running
iTunes 7.5.
If you're currently running a newer version of iTunes, remove that version first and install version 7.5. Running a version
newer than 7.5 will
not let you jailbreak your iPod.
Step 3: Preparing the iPod
First we need to make sure the iPod runs firmware version 1.1.4.
If you're currently running a firmware version lower than 1.1.4, make sure you install 1.1.4 first. If you've ever experienced
"Unknown Error 1602" or "Unknown Error 1" errors during this process, you'll have to get your iPod in DFU (Device Firmware
Upgrade) mode first.
If you've never seen these errors you can skip this step.
- Connect your iPod and fire up iTunes
- Press and hold both the home and power button on your iPod. When the
"Slide to power off" message appears, do not slide it.
- Release the power button, but keep pressing the home button, when the screen turns blank.
- Release the home button when a message pops up saying "iTunes must check the iPod software update server to identify
this device". Click on "Check" and click "OK" when you get a message telling you "iTunes has detected
an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes".
- Your screen will still be blank at this point.
Step 4: Restoring the iPod Touch to firmware 1.1.4
- Open up iTunes and go to the iPod tab. Press and hold the Shift-key and click on "Restore". Select the 1.1.4
firmware file you downloaded earlier. If you at this point get an "Unknown error 1602" or "Unknown error 1"
then you probably didn't read this document properly. Start from the beginning.
- After restoring is complete, make sure you select "Set up as a new iPod" and click "Continue". Now
untick "Automatically sync songs to my iPod" and click "Done". Next untick "Open iTunes when this iPod
is connected" and click "Apply". After this you may sync your iPod.
Step 5: Jailbreaking 1.1.4 using Ziphone
At this point your iPod is set up the same way as a factory-fresh 1.1.4 iPod, showing no traces of any previous jailbreak
attempts. You are now ready to jailbreak your iPod using Ziphone.
- Install Ziphone, which you downloaded earlier.
- Start Ziphone
- Select the "Jailbreak (iPhone or iTouch)" option and click on "Start".
- Ziphone will now start jailbreaking your iPod. You will see text scrolling over your iPod and the device will reboot a
number of times. The whole process will take a couple of minutes.
- After Ziphone is complete, you might have to set up your iPod again like you did in step 4. Make sure you select
"Set up as a new iPod" and click "Continue". Now untick "Automatically sync songs to my iPod" and
click "Done". Next untick "Open iTunes when this iPod is connected" and click "Apply". After this
you may sync your iPod.
You now have a jailbroken iPod running firmware 1.1.4, congratulations!
Step 6: Upgrading to a jailbroken 2.0 firmware
This step is ridiculously easy.
- Install iTunes 7.7
- Open up iTunes and go to the iPod tab. Press and hold the Shift-key and click on "Restore". Select the 2.0 custom
firmware file you downloaded earlier.
- iTunes will now "restore" your iPod to firmware 2.0. If you used the custom firmware linked above you will see a nifty
pineapple on your iPod during this process.
- After restoring is complete, make sure you select "Set up as a new iPod" and click "Continue". Now
untick "Automatically sync songs to my iPod" and click "Done". Next untick "Open iTunes when this iPod
is connected" and click "Apply". After this you may sync your iPod.
You now have a jailbroken iPod running firmware 2.0 with full access to the AppStore and Cydia installed, congratulations!
Step 7: Preparing your iPod
This step will give you a few basic pointers to setting up your iPod and freeing up enough space for you to install a myriad
of software.
- Start Cydia, upgrade any applications Cydia wants you to upgrade and install OpenSSH.
- Use an SSH client, such as PuTTY and connect to your iPod. There will be
a 30-40 second delay when you connect for the first time since OpenSSH has to generate some keys.
- Now let's free up some space by entering the following 5 commands:
# mkdir /private/var/Fonts
# cp -Rp /System/Library/Fonts/* /private/var/Fonts/
# mv /System/Library/Fonts /System/Library/Fonts.backup
# ln -s /private/var/Fonts/ /System/Library/Fonts
# mv /System/Library/Fonts.backup /private/var/Fonts.backup
Your iPod should now have about 160MB of free space on the Application drive, which is more than enough for a large number of
applications.
Enjoy your jailbroken 2.0 iPod!
