My life on the internet

  1. I do not believe in anonymity on the Internet.
However appealing this concept may be to some, the fact remains that it isn't realistic. Companies and individuals alike need to be aware that there really is no such thing as anonymous Internet usage. If some one wants to determine what a computer is doing on the Internet, there's always a trail to follow.
  2. I do not obfuscate my email address.
Obfuscating my email address feels like saying the spammers have won. I refuse to do that. Instead I help out by donating MX records to Project Honeypot to make sure that those spammers who insist on spamming me, will be hunted down and dealt with accordingly.
  3. I do not obfuscate my whois information.
I will not hide behind an obfuscated or invalid whois record. I stand behind the content on my domains and always give users who are willing to go through the trouble of doing a whois lookup a valid way of contacting me.
  4. I do not block advertisements on websites.
Companies and individuals spend incredible amounts of time, effort and money producing and delivering content to people via a website. Servers, hosting, bandwidth, software plus the actual production and editing of the content done on a reasonable scale costs a fortune. Days, if not weeks or months, of designing and coding on the technical side, endless hours of writing, editing, video production and encoding, image selection - all delivered to the user for free, gratis, no cost, without charge. With one caveat - adverts.

What will happen to all these sites if everybody blocked the ads? They wouldn't be able to sustain thier operations, and they would have to resort to a different business model - or just pack it all in. 80-90% of content on the net would disappear or go behind subscription services. The ad blockers would have achieved nothing.

In short: the biggest damage blocking banner ads will have is in killing content and informational sites that depend upon banner advertising to generate revenues. Blocking banner ads is shortsighted and will significantly reduce consumers' options in the end.
  5. I do not flame, flood or perform Denial of Service attacks.
The Internet is not the same as real life. It's only ones and zeroes. If a user bothers me, I block them in an appropriate way. Abuse by others will be reported to the appropriate party and/or their upstream provider.
  6. I do my best to follow the netiquette.
I am perfectly aware of the fact that the Internet is not just my personal playground and I therefor try to follow proper netiquette as much as possible.
